John W. Hall is the Ambrose-Hesseltine Assistant Professor of Military History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A Wisconsin native, Hall spent over fifteen years as an active duty U.S. Army officer before joining the UW-Madison Department of History. Hall is a former member of the faculty at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and most recently served as the chief of the Future Studies Branch of the U.S. Army's Future Warfare Division at Fort Monroe, Virginia. His perspectives on the future of warfare are balanced by his research in colonial, irregular conflicts, and civil-military relations. Hall is the author of Uncommon Defense: Indian Allies in the Black Hawk War (Harvard University Press, 2009) and a forthcoming military history of Indian Removal. He holds a BS in history from the U.S. Military Academy and a PhD in History from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
