Schemata and Fruitful Devotion

Milwaukee artist Denis Sargent’s series of works, entitled Schemata, is influenced by a variety of textile traditions and combines imagery from ancient to contemporary sources. Sargent utilizes a visual thought process of remembering and organizing images and their related emotions into personally and culturally meaningful forms. Through Schemata, he is considering the content of this complex process.

Michael Velliquette, of Madison, creates intricate and ornate cut paper works which are inspired by his interest in subjects ranging from world mythologies and folk art to Symbolism and Art Brut. Velliquette’s paper pieces are made from multi-colored card stock which is hand-cut into shapes and glued in layers onto a background. The resulting collage is highly textured, detailed and dimensional.
