Congratulations to the the Wisconsin People & Ideas / Wisconsin Book Festival 2010 Short Story Contest Winners!
- 1st Place: "Anything that Sticks," by Sheila M. Hanrahan - Whitefish Bay
- 2nd Place: "A Certain Change of Light," by J.K. Dane - Chippewa Falls
- 3rd Place: "Family Photos," by Jane Sadusky - Madison
The final nine were "a strong group of stories, whose settings range from farm to tattoo parlor to elementary school classroom to nursing home," says lead contest judge Dwight Allen. "The top three are all ambitious and accomplished works of fiction, and each casts a fresh and welcome light on the human condition." Allen, a fiction writer from Madison who has been a judge for the short story contest in the past, notes that there is "much to admire in all nine finalists," a sentiment shared by contest preliminary judges Nickolas Butler, Alison Jones Chaim, and Beth Lueck.
Wisconsin People & Ideas owes all the contest judges a debt of gratitude for their contributions to both the contest and the literary community at large.

Every year
Wisconsin People & Ideas hosts a statewide short story contest, open to all Wisconsin residents and students. The annual contest brings out the best of Wisconsin writers, and places a spotlight on one of our state's finest cultural resources. This year we are again fortunate to have as our partner in the contest the Wisconsin Book Festival. The Wisconsin Book Festival is the main pillar in support of the operation of the contest, as well as a much-appreciated partner who brings attention to our winning authors with a reading during their annual event. Additional support for the annual short story contest comes from Avol's Bookstore, and Edenfred, the creative arts residency of the Terry Family Foundation.

ABOUT THE SHORT STORY CONTEST
Winners will receive prizes of $500 (first place), $250 (second place), and $100 (third place). Their stories will be published serially, beginning with the first-prize story, online at wisconsinacademy.org and in the summer 2010 issue of
Wisconsin People & Ideas. The first-place story will be reviewed by a noted literary agent, and the author will receive a one-week stay at Edenfred, a creative arts residency in Madison owned by the Terry Family Foundation.
Wisconsin People & Ideas is the only quarterly magazine in the state that regularly features Wisconsin writers and Wisconsin fiction, creative nonfiction, and essays--all in one place! Submissions to our annual contest and
membership in the Wisconsin Academy allow us to continue this proud tradition. So, please consider becoming a member of the Wisconsin Academy before you submit your manuscript. Don't forget: Wisconsin Academy members receive a $5.00 discount on the submission fee!
