In our world of dashed-off texts and emails, a thoughtful note or letter stands out. But what to say, and how to say it?

Join New York Times Bestselling memoirist and avid letter writer Marja Mills for “The Art of Writing Notes & Letters.” No need to fear a sympathy letter will fall flat or a thank you note will sound perfunctory. Each week, she’ll offer instruction and in-class writing prompts to help you to draft another note or letter you can be proud to send. They needn’t be long. Oftentimes, a note of a few sentences suffices, though letters have their place, too. Clarity and specificity rule, and wit is a plus. These tips apply to electronic correspondence, as well, of course.

An example: Don’t begin your note with “Thank you for...” Better to start by saying how you are using the gift or why you like it. Then thank the person. It avoids sounding like you’re just crossing the note off your “to do” list.

The class covers note and letter writing for a variety of situations: crafting a concise holiday message; marking a graduation, retirement or milestone birthday; offering a real apology; sending thanks; reconnecting with an old friend or associate; and more. You’ll read examples of notes and letters that do the job beautifully, and get some in-class practice.
