The Practical and the Liberal Arts
Amidst the intense national debate over the value of higher education, the Liberal Arts have been much maligned as a useless pursuit with no practical application. Yet over a third of all Fortune 500 CEOs have a Liberal Arts degree, and Silicon Valley tech companies are hiring almost as many Liberal Arts graduates as those with STEM degrees. So, why does the myth of “the useless Liberal Arts degree” persist?
Kevin Reilly, UW System President Emeritus, moderates a panel of experts who will discuss the economic, personal, and societal impacts of a Liberal Arts education and explore what America's diverse body of students and employers—as well as the American public—say they want and need from our colleges and universities.
This panel discussion is hosted by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters. Advance registration is required. Registration is $10 for the general public, and free for Wisconsin Academy members and students with a valid photo ID (please present ID upon entrance).
