(AC Spring 2023) Writing About Food with Marja Mills

Food tells a story, about family and traditions, culture and travel. This workshop features tips for writing vividly about food, engaging all the senses and reflecting on the power of taste and aroma to evoke memories of people and places. 

Your subject could be as simple as a freshly picked tomato, warm from the sun and sprinkled with salt, and the person who painstakingly tended to it in his garden.  Or perhaps making a Christmas glazed ham with your grandmother’s recipe brings to mind the people who long ago gathered around her table, laughing and teasing and, a couple of them, simmering with resentment.

Outstanding examples of this kind of writing and in-class prompts help participants craft short passages about food, meals and the stories that surround them.  Whether you want to write about food for its own sake, or to incorporate these stories into a memoir or other narrative, this workshop will help you jump start that process.
