John Achter

Dr. John Achter is a licensed psychologist with 18 years of experience working in college and university counseling centers, 13 of those years as director of the Counseling Center at UW-Stout. During that time, Achter helped lead an initiative among UW-System counseling centers to standardized data collection so it could be compare UW-System students to statewide and national benchmarks. Through this work Achter became involved with the Coalition for Children’s Mental Health (CCMH) and was a member of the advisory board through May 2018

In 2015 Achter moved into the role of Associate Dean of Students at UW-Stout. He chairs the Behavior Intervention Team, a multi-disciplinary group that fields reports regarding high risk behavioral concerns that present themselves on campus, and continues to stay connected with the system counseling center initiative. Achter also co-coordinate another data-gathering initiative in the UW-System—a periodic administration of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) that gives the system and individual campuses information on a range of health-related experiences of our students, including several mental health indicators.
