Millard Susman

Millard Susman previously served as president of the Wisconsin Academy Board of Directors. Susman received his AB in zoology from Washington University and his PhD in genetics from Caltech. He joined the Laboratory of Genetics at UW-Madison in 1962 and retired in 2001. During his time at the university, he did research in the genetics of bacterial viruses and served as chair of the Genetics Department for 14 years, associate dean of the Medical School for 9 years, and director of the Center for Biology Education for 6 years. He was one of the founding faculty members of the highly-regarded Biology Core Curriculum. He taught courses in microbial genetics and general genetics for over 30 years and participated in a number of projects aimed at improving the quality of biology education. After retirement, he returned to serve as interim director of the newly formed Institute for Cross- College Biology Education, whose mission was to promote excellence in undergraduate education in the life sciences. Since retiring, he has been active in the University of Wisconsin Retirement Association, serving a member of the Board of Directors and, in 2012, as president.
