James W. Perry

James W. Perry is a former Secretary of the Wisconsin Academy Board of Directors. Perry retired in 2011 as University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley Campus Executive Officer & Dean, having served in that capacity since 1993. He earned his BS, MS, and PhD in the biological sciences from UW-Madison. Perry was a faculty member and chair of the Department of Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries at Frostburg State University (Maryland) prior to returning to Wisconsin. His expertise is in botany and plant pathology, and has taught general biology, general botany, plant morphology and electron microscopy. Perry is the primary author of a number of texts used in the biological sciences.

Active community participants, Perry and wife Joy hold dear the liberal arts and sciences principles espoused by the Academy, seek to live lightly in their environment, and help others understand, interpret, and appreciate the boundless beauty of Wisconsin. They spend as much time outdoors as possible, either at their former dairy farm residence in Winnebago County or small middle-of-the-woods cabin in Iron County. Perry also races a 1962 Volvo P1800 sports car in vintage road races around the country.
