Patricia Brady

Patricia Brady retired as General Counsel of the University of Wisconsin System in 2010 after a thirty-year career with the System’s legal office.  Before joining the UW System, she served as an assistant attorney general in North Carolina, where she represented the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the University of North Carolina.  She has been a speaker and consultant on legal issues in higher education, has taught higher education law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is the author of A History of the University of Wisconsin System, published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2020.  She received her BA from UW-Madison and her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School.  She has served on volunteer boards including WiSys and the UW Medical Foundation, and is a past president of the Village of Shorewood Hills.  She currently chairs the UW-Madison English Department Board of Visitors.  She is married to attorney Robert J. Smith.
