Location
The Wisconsin Academy is honored to welcome Joy Harjo to the Milwaukee Public Library for a community-focused exploration of identity, ancestry, and the meaning of home. A celebrated poet and musician of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Harjo will illuminate the layered meanings of "home," drawing on themes of land, memory, displacement, and resilience.
In this special event, Harjo invites us to reflect on our own connections to the land and the ancestors who walked it before us. Her work offers a profound reflection on the strength found in storytelling and the resilience required to sustain a culture. Harjo will be joined onstage by Sherman Funmaker, Ho-Chunk member, poet, essayist, and speaker, who will contribute to the conversation.
This event is free and open to the public, inviting all of Milwaukee to gather and consider how we inhabit our shared home. Boswell Book Company will be selling a collection of Harjo's work onsite before and after the speaking event.
Registration is encouraged.
Joy Harjo will also appear in Madison on Thursday, May 21, find that event's information here: https://www.wisconsinacademy.org/evenings/finding-home-evening-joy-harjo
