Roberto Torres Mata is a first-generation Mexican American visual artist, educator, and curator whose interdisciplinary practice explores migration, displacement, and cultural identity. Born in Huntington Beach, California, and shaped by experiences across the Midwest and Mexico, his work reflects the complexities of movement between cultures and borders.

Torres Mata’s practice is grounded in printmaking while also incorporating sculpture, drawing, papermaking, and installation. His work often examines both human and animal migration, addressing political, social, and emotional dimensions of displacement while fostering empathy and shared narratives. He earned his B.A. in graphic design from Western Illinois University and his M.A. and M.F.A. in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chazen Museum of Art, Arsenale Di Venezia Nord, and Antigua Academia de San Carlos, and is held in university, museum, and private collections. Torres Mata currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Printmaking at the University of Virginia, where he continues to develop his artistic practice alongside teaching and community engagement.
