Join Wence Martinez, Roberto Torres Mata, and Wisconsin Academy staff to celebrate the opening of the artists' solo exhibitions, In Motion and Rooted at the James Watrous Gallery. These exhibitions will be on view from July 31 through October 11, 2026.

Remarks begin at 6:00 pm. Free and open to the public. Light refreshements served.

Wence Martinez

Born in 1959 in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico, Wence Martinez spent his childhood shepherding and learning to weave under his father and grandfather. At age 14 a scholarship in weaving took him to Taller Nacional de Tapiz in Mexico City.

Roberto Torres Mata

Roberto Torres Mata is a first-generation Mexican American visual artist, educator, and curator whose interdisciplinary practice explores migration, displacement, and cultural identity.

The Academy creates a special series to explore big themes and issues through a dynamic, interdisciplinary series of public programs, art exhibitions, workshops, magazine features, and civil discourse, in partnership with organizations across the state.

Events are open to the public, with hybrid and virtual options typically available for statewide connections.
