Michelle Miller is Associate Director at the UW-Center for Agricultural Systems, the sustainable agriculture research center on the Madison campus. As a practicing anthropologist she engages in participatory research with Wisconsin farmers and UW researchers. For the last 15 years she has partnered with fruit growers to assist them in reducing pesticide risk. She also works on food transportation and regional supply chains, anticipating climate change and adaptation scenarios, perennializing agriculture as a climate adaptation response, terroir, and culinary identity. Miller serves on the Wisconsin Farmers Union Foundation board. Active from an early age in the Wisconsin Farmers Union youth program, Miller started her career by lobbying for state investment in farmers markets as a volunteer for Rural Wisconsin in 1982. She went on to work for the state Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Program, organizing farmer networks and field days, and then for World Wildlife Fund in the Great Lakes states and provinces on agricultural pollution prevention.
